Bytown, the original settlement at the junction of the Rideau and Ottawa Rivers, was a lumber town supporting the construction of the Rideau Canal, named in honour of Colonel John By who oversaw the canal project. Renamed Ottawa in 1854, it was chosen as the capital of Canada by Queen Victoria in 1857. The city grew into a political and cultural hub, home to Parliament Hill.
